Art Gallery
is located on historic Bent Street, Taos New
Mexico in the
Ferdinand
Maxwell House. The Maxwell home is one of the best examples of
a true territorial style building remaining in Taos.
Built in 1859 as a
residence and merchantile store, it contains an inner courtyard with a
large zaguan entry. The courtyard was a safe haven for the
occupants during a time when the Ute Indians still made raids on the
town. Built of thick adobe and
finished with mud plaster, this building was once bought by
artist Rebecca Salsbury James as a birthday present for her husband,
and it
is now owned by The Taos Historic Museums. The museum owners have kept
it as close to original as possible with short doorways
leading from room to room. The tall ten foot ceilings contain lumber
from Taos' first sawmill . The ambiance created by this historic
setting makes a fine home to the extensive collection of art, from the
early Taos Art Colony, which it houses.
