Beatrice Mandelman

Beatrice Mandelman

Beatrice Mandelman (1912–1998) was a pioneering force in American abstraction and a central figure of the Taos Moderns. She developed her skills with the Works Progress Administration and excelled in New York artists' circles alongside mid-century legends like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Her trajectory shifted permanently in 1944 when, seeking increased creative freedom, she relocated permanently to Northern New Mexico with her husband, fellow renowned artist Louis Ribak (1902-1979).

In the high New Mexico desert, Mandelman seamlessly fused elements of Cubism and Expressionism with the vibrant ambient light and dramatic topography of the Southwest. As her distinct regional style evolved, she transitioned toward flatter geometric surfaces, crisply defined forms, and a brilliantly heightened color palette. Alongside Ribak, she also became an essential community builder, helping to co-found the Taos Valley Art School to mentor future generations of artists. Today, her legacy as a trailblazing woman modernist continues to be celebrated on a grand scale. Her highly sought-after mixed-media paintings and collages are proudly preserved in premier institutions worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
