Gustave Baumann

Gustave Baumann (1881-1971)

Born in Germany, trained in Munich and Chicago, Baumann is one of the last pioneer artists of the Santa Fe Colony to arrive in Santa Fe in 1918. He painted in oils but received world recognition as a printmaker, specializing in colored woodblocks. His renditions of pictographs in caves in the Frijoles Canyon ruins near Los Alamos are quite unique. The Fine Arts Museum of Santa Fe owns a collection of over 1500 Baumann objects including prints, sketches, commercial art, painting and hand-craved marionettes. His portrayals of life in the pueblos of New Mexico are some of the most beautiful woodblocks created.
