Rebecca Salsbury James

Rebecca Stroud Salsbury James (1891–1968) is celebrated as a formidable titan of American Modernism, highly collectable for her pioneering role as one of the few women operating at the core of the historic avant-garde circle. In 1929, she famously introduced O'Keeffe to the landscape of New Mexico during a pivotal summer stay in Taos. She is well-remembered for single-handedly translating traditional folk idioms into a sophisticated modern visual language, primarily through her exquisite mastery of reverse oil painting on glass. Her rare, luminescent still lifes, large-scale flower blossoms, and precisionist desert landscapes are highly prized by collectors for their brilliant clarity, immaculate execution, and intense spatial depth. Additionally, her mid-career revival of historical colcha embroidery infused traditional Southwestern textile art with an uncompromising modernist eye, making her finite, cross-disciplinary works exceptionally rare treasures in private collections.

Born in London to American parents traveling with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, James was raised in New York City and educated at the School of Ethical Culture. Entirely self-taught as a painter, her early artistic sensibility was forged through her marriage to legendary photographer Paul Strand, placing her in a close-knit circle of visionaries like Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe. Falling permanently in love with the high desert, James relocated there full-time after her divorce, immersing herself in the local community and eventually marrying a prominent local trader. Today, her historic output stands as a brilliant, vital intersection of East Coast radical modernism and authentic Western heritage.
